Hi All: For some strange reason I thought The Ponderosa was in Virginia so imagine my surprise when I found out it was in Nevada and bordered Lake Tahoe. Now I am sure this is near Area 51 and also very near where many hydrogen bombs were tested. So what is my point you may ask. Well I find it rather unusual that many of the movie and television stars who filmed a lot in this area met an untimely death due to some form of cancer. Michael Landon Dan Blocker Lorne Green Steve McQueen And I am sure the list could grow if I studied it a little further. Has anyone ever done tests in this area and in Nevada and Las Vegas itself to determine the level of radiation that there is in the soil and water and air ? I remember reading once an article that addressed just this problem but I do not remember the conclusions of the study. Regards Don Barone

Hi Don
That's pretty amazing! I don't see why there can't be a connection. I mean, look at those true stories you see every month about suburbs finally tracking down health problems to secret dumping sites etc.
Back home in my old hometown in South Africa they recently found one guy has been burying toxic waste on his farm.. at the top of our river mouth!!! It's a major holiday resort and everyone fishes/swims/plays in that river. Kids to adults.
So, nothing's impossible.

I don't know that Michael Landon, Lorne Green, and Steve McQueen could be called as untimely .... they weren't that young after all ... and how many more people smoked then? .....
Dan Blocker though was too young to die (I think esp so since he was 44 at death .. the same age as myself) ... was it cancer or a heart attack due to his weight problem? ....

Would any of the shows actually have been filmed there Don? .......... The way they do TV shows and movies I'd think that most of the work was done on a production stage and that the mountains of California provided any outdoor shots needed .............

Good point Kat. I never thought about that. Most Tv shows never leave the sets, do they?
Michael Landon seemed young, but he always seemed younger than he was anyway. Dan Blocker was really sad though. I loved that show when I was a kid.

I remember when Dan Blocker died ........ I just adored him ... he was so sweet and gentle .... I found a site that said he was 44 at death ... and that he died after complications from surgery ... but it didn't say what the surgery was ....
Steve McQueen died of a heart attack after lung cancer surgery .... I do seem to recall that he smoked .... Michael Landon was pancreatic cancer .... I can't find the cause of death for Loren Green anywhere ... but he was quite old wasn't he? ......
Bonanza, and other westerns, were about the only shows I was allowed to watch as a kid ... if there was even a hint about sex in it my Daddy was turning the channel ! ............. I didn't watch the Hollywood Squares until after I was married ! ........ I must say I didn't miss much .....

Hi Kat ...
You are probably correct about where things were filmed although I do remember reading an article where it stated that many of the stars who worked in the true area did indeed succumb to health probelms. I honestly do not know how much if any of Bonaza was shot on location but remember Steve McQueen also starred in an old western of the late 50's called I believe "Wanted. Dead or Alive" and this may have been filmed in this area. At least something for us all to check on in our free time.
Cheers Don Barone

Nice website "Adam".
It brought back a lot of memories, I LOVE Bonanza as a kid. I got to see a few episodes again in my late teens and found it hadn't aged too well, but then I never watched after Hoss died.

Dear Michelle, DON and Others, in the younger days of my life i was a fan of BONANZA as well. and dan blocker as HOSS was a very sympathic actor. i believe he had only to act as the man he simply was himself ! his sudden and very early death was one of the many sad personal tragedies we are confrontated with every day. some more details regarding the circumstances of DAN Blockers death: in 1972, on april 29th, Dan entered the daniel freeman hospital ( los angeles, inglewood ) for a GALL surgery (gall-bladder). the surgery itself was performed normally, but later it happened a blut-clot in one of his lungs, eventually causing a lung-embolism, and DAN did not die suddenly, but two weeks later on may, 13th, at the age of 43 ! a tragedy to his wife DOLPHIA and the four children: the twins debra-lee and dann-lynn, and his sons david and dirk ! Dan Blocker was soon transported back home to the fields of his childhood in texas, and was buried in DE KALB (texas) at the WOODMEN cemetery. ( RIP ! ) some more at: www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/BB/fbl26.html best regards from bavaria: Bernie

Thanks for all the information, Bernie Dan Blocker was my favourite too. He just ooozed "niceness". Some people, even on TV or film, have a way about them that makes you feel you could invite them home for dinner and end up with a great friendship. I never realised how young he was. Very sad. regards from Scotland
