Hi all ... This is to continue a discssion Kat and I were having over at Graham's site about the melting point of steel as opposed to the heat generated by burning jet fuel. Here is what I have found ... The Burning Temperature of Jet FuelWhat's the melting point of steel? That depends on the alloy of steel you are talking about. The term alloy is almost always used incorrectly these days, especially amongst bicyclists. They use the term to mean aluminum. What the term alloy really means is a mixture of metals, any kind of metals. Almost all metal used today is a mixture and therefore an alloy. Most steel has other metals added to tune its properties, like strength, corrosion resistance, or ease of fabrication. Steel is just the element iron that has been processed to control the amount of carbon. Iron, out of the ground, melts at around 1510 degrees C (2750°F). Steel often melts at around 1370 degrees C (2500°F). The melting Point of SteelOther Links of Melting Point of Steel From GoogleIt would appear that jet fuel does not burn even close to the temperature needed to melt steel. Regards Don Barone

Hi all ... Another thing that has bothered me since this incident is the fact that the airplane seems to slice through the building like a knife through butter and there seems to be too long a delay before it explodes. Strange and I can't seem to account for this delay [roughly two seconds before explosion]. Impact as seen from the groundRegards Don Barone

Hi Don
IIRC jet fuel is kerosene and has a "higher" ignition temperature than gasoline. Undoubtedly it took some time to aerosolilze the kerosene and then ignite it transforming the plane into a giant fuel air bomb which is exactly wha Al Qaeda had intended in the first place. Just normal physics here.
However one thing that I can't believe and I've tried to make my way through the 9/11 commision report is just exactly where did these "non-pilots" get their training. It certainly wasn't in the united states but once they took over the planes they knew exactly how to fly them and right down the nuances of disconnecting the transmitter pods so that they vanished from the radar screens. In the course of my work I talked briefly to an FAA woman who was working on her PhD thesis that was going to concern the 9/11 incident.
