Greetings,
Arguably the most evocative of imagery created is that of Dante Gabriel Rossetti(1828-1882)of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood.
Using Dante as his first name in honour of Dante Aligheiri.
His depiction of the Smaragdine Astarte is an analogy to the fertility that she represents, as a counterpart to Ishtar/Isis, who respectively represent the fertility rite via the vernal equinox/Springtime and childbirth/resurrection. Deep Scarlet, the blood is the life, also a colour attached to Ishtar.
Above her head is her Symbol, the eight pointed asterism.
Astarte
The same imagery is forthcoming with his A Vision of Fiametta, The Flame of Love, as in Love and War, Ishtar's assignments, analogious to Aphrodite, she of the Clam shell. Based on Boccaccio's Fiametta.
Above her head is a red bird, it looks like a red dove, but we are talking about fire, which can only be indicative of a Phoenix. Resurgam.
Trapped within her halo is the form of an Angel, she wears a Heart pendant on her wrist.
A Vision of Fiametta
La Bella Mano, The Beautiful Hand mimics the same imagery. The Lady is attended by two red winged Cherubim, she washes her beautiful hands in a Clam shell recepticle. The mirror behind her acts as a halo against her head. Such imagery is implying at her divinity, thus taking inspiration fom consistent themes.
The spiral Torc on the platter is the Ouroboros, representative of the process of renewal, it rests below the golden globe which has at the apex, an angel of atypical demeanour.
Behind her, by her back on the tablecloth is the form of another bird.
La Bella Mano
This is the Phrygian Sibylla/Cybele. She who brought Attis back to life, after he castrated himself, this strikes resonance with Osiris and Isis, whence she took his Genitalia from the remain of his body and impregnated herself. Sibylla/Cybele is usually depicted as being accompanied by two Lions, just as her Babylonian counterpart.
This brings to mind Michael Maier and Atalanta Fugiens, Maier influenced Newton profoundly, amongst other's.
But when in Cybele's temple they would prove
The utmost joys of their Excessive Love.
The Matron Goddess thought herself disdained
Her rites Unhallowed and her shrine profaned
Then her Revenge makes Roughness o'er them rise.
And Hideous feireenesse Sparkle from their Eyes
Still more Amazed to see themselves look red.
Whilst both to Lions Each Other dread
He that can Cybele's Mystic change explain
And those two Lions with true Redness stain.
Commands that treasure plenteous Nature gives
And free from Pain in Wisdom Splendour lives.
Astarte is attended by two torch bearers, Fiametta by two butterflies, one above and one below, La Bella Mano is attended by two Cherubim and Sibylla, again by two butterflies.
This consistent with the two Lions, or in ancient depictions on bas relief of Winged Ishtar/Innanna, she is attended by two owls.
Light and Love
