Michaelangelo: Jonah in the Sistine Chapel

Dear Fellows and Kindred Spirits,

I was prompted by Charlotte and her mentioning the Sistine Chapel. On analysis Michelangelo has inserted a curious feature within the design structure. The most prominent feature in the schema is that of Jonah. He occupies the space on the vaulting at the top rear of the chapel.



Book 32 of the Bible. Jonah is one of the 12 minor prophets.
Wherein he was traditionally swallowed by a whale and stayed there for 3 days and 3 nights.

Michelangelo has other idea's, he does not visualize The Cetus, but a fish.



Et praeparavit Dominus piscem grandem ut deglutiret Ionam: et erat Ionas in ventre piscis tribus diebus, et tribus noctibus.

And the Lord prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish for 3 days and 3 nights. JONAH 2:1

Jonah, son of Amittai is also mentioned im Kings 14:25

That still leaves the reasoning as to why Michelangelo would afford Jonah such prominence.

The Fish plays an important part in popular Christian symbolism and is irrefutably derived from the geometric form known as the Vesica Piscis, This form follows distinct geometric qualities that are centred around the number 3. The square root of 3 specifically.





Wherein, root3=1.7320508, so the width of the fish multiplied by 1.732 equals the height of the fish and the height of the fish divided by 1.732/2=.866 equals the diameter of the circles.

The Vesica piscis literally translates a Fish Bladder from the Latin.

The geometric properties of the form are such that a double Vesica actually defines the Hexagram. Wherein a side of each triangle represents the height of the fish. The Mandorla.



The important geometric qualities attached to the 'measure of the fish' is alluded to in the New Testament in the miraculous catch of fish, 153. This appears in the gospel of John 21.11. An approximation of root3 is then given as the result of the ratio between 265:153

This is also referred to in Matthew 12:38-40

The Sign Of Jonah

'At this point some of the doctors of the law and the Pharisees said 'Master we should like you to show us a sign.' He answered'It is a wicked and godless generation that asks for a sign; and the only sign given will be the sign of the prophet Jonah. Jonah was in the sea beast's belly for 3 days and 3 nights, and in the same way the son of man will be in the bowels of the earth for 3 days and 3 nights'

The Sign Of Jonah - The Vesica Piscis - This is the geometric cipher Michelangelo is nodding to by putting Jonah centre stage.

The arithmological properties of the square root of 3 has affinities with familiar values and on closer inspection, the reliance on coincidence diminishes;

for example root3= 1.732 multiplied by 1000=
1732.0508, divided by 3=577.35, multiplied by itself=333333
and that 577.35 divided by 1.732/2=0.866=666.6

1.732*1000=1732/3=577.33333/1.732/2=666.666666

The Vesica Piscis is the geometric key, or one of them. Along with other roots and geometric proportions.

This can be further augmented by the branch of Cabalistic practice termed; NOTARIKON. This is a system where each letter of a word performs the first in a new word, like an anacronym.

In this respect we have the Gnostic Acrostic of the Fish, which has been subsumed by Catholic practices.

The word for the FISHES in greek - ICHTHYES, from this in greek notation we get;

IOTA.CHI.THETA.UPSILON.ETA.SIGMA, And from the letters we get the words

I - HSOYS = Jesus
X - PISTOS = Christ
(TH) - EOS = God

So the word for fish is the acrostic for Jesus Christ God Son is Saviour.

And via Alpha numeric transliteration; Gematria, another branch of cabalistic practice, the value of;

which is also the value of;

TO DIKTYON=The Net=1224
O PATRIKOS LOGOS=The word of the Father=1224

and the 1224, which is the square root of 1.5*1000 multipled by the square root of 2 equals the square root of 3;

root 1.5*1000*root2=root3*1000

1224.744*1.4142135=1732.0508

The reference to the 3 days and 3 nights within the texts concerning Jonah and the Fish may actually be a cipher pointing to the square root of 3 in relation to the vesica.

The underlying Assyrian references are all to apparent and anthropologically may provide an origin for both the Figure of John the Baptist and Jonah. In that EA the Mesopotamian God and so called fish of Heaven, known in Greek as OANNES, Whence the name of John is derived, IHANN(W)S. OANNES is typically accredited with teaching mankind wisdom and Maths, etc
OANNES had the body of a fish, but the head of a man under as the feet of a man under the tale, Berossus tells us about Oannes.



The visual symbolism mirrors the first incarnation of VISHNU, The Supreme being and member of the TRIMURTI with Brahma and Shiva. Vishnu the preserver of the Universe. Light being one aspect of VISHNU, represented often by the sun. He strides across Earth 3 times.

Matsya the Fish, The first avatar of Vishnu, Rama, Krishna and Buddha being considered the 7th, 8th and 9th avatars respectively.



The Trimurti and the Trinity, The references to light and the sun are not easily dismissable, IHSOYS and IHANN(W)S fit the bill perfectly, in spirit they could be avatars of Vishnu.

Ultimately, this theme lends itself to Mythos cross culturally. From The NOMMO of the Dogon, which has resonance with Christian symbolism in that the NOMMO was said to be crucified on a tree, which mimics the STAUROS of St Paul and The Gnostics. The term 'Drinking of my body' is also applied.

Poseidon, also popularly depicted with a Fish Tail is usually given as Lord of the surface of the Earth, a member of another trinity, his brothers Zeus, Lord of the Skies and Hades, Lord of the Underworld. The number 3 being consistent.

Dagon, the adversary in the Bible is also depicted as a fish, but it has been suggested that this was an evolution adapted by maritime cultures , such as the Pheonicians and Canaanites.



Enki/Ea/Oannes The Lord of the Earth and the house of Abzu, The house of the Far Waters, His symbols were a Fish and a Goat.
The bringer of Wisdom and all magic. His daughter was Ishtar/Inanna/Isis whose symbol can be found in the Evening Star/Morning Star that is Venus and consistent with geometry, The Star of Ishtar which bears her name contains within it consistent visualizations.

The eight pointed cross of St John, The Malteses Cross. Popularly used by the Knights Hospitallers. The design focus supposedly centred around the 8 langues/tongues that were symbolized by the 8 points, but as we can see the point determine the langues, from the star, not the other way around.

An excellent post to which I haven't much to add (as you know I could add loads of details but mostly it would only be a repeat, so I will try to keep my comments to a minimum of a rehash).

The reference to the 3 days and nights relates to the combination of the 3 dark or inner/lower and 3 light upper or outer values. These are also the primal trines/trigrams of Heaven and Earth that make up all 64 Hexagrams or Seals of Solomon's Temple. The construction of energy within the body of the Earth (the animal form of the body) is made on the 6 lines or all multiples of x 6 - and these are placed together as opposites the 12 divisions of the Aeons are given - Jonah or 'The Fish' is an Aeon, and likewise Jesus can be seen as a 'Lord of an Aeon'.

All the signs of the Aeons have their function in 'The Work', but as I have said before here a couple of times now, the sign of 'The Fish' is the only other sign that can be directly observed from the top of the pyramidal mountain, as is displayed to us at Glastonbury, so it is the main key. The mountain is drawn in the image of the Phoenix or Benu Bird, as the mountain is the image of eternal rebirth and resurrection because the source of 'The Well' flows as a regular and totally dependable source - the work of construction undertaken by the body is the blood of passion (it is the body that is offered up in sacrifice to complete 'The Work'). The ancient image of the twins is of the Earthly and Heavenly, the dark and light, and therefore the nature of the earth or the lesser or lower part (the earthly being of Jesus) is transformed and becomes the Heavenly (Christ) - this is the nature of the practice in which we find our eternal being and comprehend the universal animal drives that bring the body to act on the field.

Through the cycles of time/space the construction of the mountain rises and then sinks again below the waters, as the law that governs these cycles of rebirth are placed beyond all created realms. The cycles are the twins, or the days and nights of Brahma, and so the cycles of life come forth into animal form and then return to the source energy again, but nothing can kill or turn off the source of the waters. We have described this as a reversal of poles, and Thoth has much to add upon the question of when such a reversal occurs, those who become entrapped by seeing only the movement of the animal body, as for them this means they become bound-up in the darkness for Aeons until again the cycle again brings the return of the light.

The image given is of a vessel firstly void of light and life, it's a potential or seed, but to realize its potential it needs to be penetrated and entered by the light/law from below or within, which brings the dark to order out of chaos as the light rises-up through the 6 steps.

That's pure poetry Paul. The days and nights of Brahma, I have come across those before and I am will incorporate them into current numeric correlation theory. They are all working from the same sequencing, just differing contexts.

I can envision the ancestors of the Classical Greeks, The Dorians, Ionians and Aelions descending on the Hellenes and transmitting the same proto-philosophies espoused by the contemporaneous developers of the Rig Veda, The divide saparating the two being the Great Aryan plain that is somewhere between Iran and Armenia, The area located around Lake Van. Using the term Aryan anthropologically and not the subverted ans twisted jargon of National Socialism.

The Dorians are generally believed to have migrated circa 1200bc. to 950 bc and it is generally accepted that the Ionians crossed the Aegean later on. The similarities thus expressed by the works of Heraclitus of Ephesus, Parmenides of Elea and Pythagoras of Samos all strike a chord with the East, what with the Transmigraion of souls and the unity of opposites, light and dark.

Interestingly, prompted once more by Charlotte, Cetus occupies the same portion of the sky as Pisces and Aquarius, known as the water, Cetus symbolized Tiamat in Ancient Babylon. Ea/Oannes's son Marduk, slew Tiamat. Beautiful.

Refering back to that portion of the sky called the water, mainly because of the concentration of marine themed constellations,Pisces-fish, Cetus-whale, Aquarius-water bearer, Eradinus-river, Capricorn (fish-Goat),piscis austrinus

The story of Jonah may also be alluding to Akkadian/Annunaki astronomical/logical reference with regard to that portion of the sky, in this case.

Cetus, the Whale was the embodiment of the great Goddess Tiamat, which literally translates as the sea. Marduk, the son of EA/OANNES/ENKI Lord of the waters. splits Tiamat into two and creates Heaven and Earth.

Capricorn, The Goat fish was the star of Tashmetum, the wife Nabu, The God of Wisdom and writing and associated with Hermes in Greek Mythos. Nabu was The son of Marduk, and the Grandson of Ea, whose symbols were the Fish and The Goat.

We are generally told that a Whale swallowed Jonas, but we can also accept that it was a Great Sea Beast. Interesting then that Cetus and Pisces are directly opposite each other in the sky.

Tellingly, Capricorn, the fish-goat asociated with Nabu/Hermes and EA/OANNES is, under the Tropical Zodiac, occupied by the Sun between the 22 of December and 19 January.

Enki(lord of waters), concerned the choas created by apsu(house of waters), slew him, this angered Kingu, Apsu's son, he told Tiamat(the sea/deep, who vowed revenge upon the Gods

This may be the allusion to Jonah/Oannes being swallowed by the sea beast(Tiamat).

Pan(All) was also represented by Capricorn, in that the great Beast Typhon chased Pan, who jumped into the Nile and transformed into a Fish-Goat. Typhon being seen as Set, as Typhon led a band of conspirators and slew Dionysius. Set slaying Osiris.

The slaying of Typhon by Zeus is synonymous with Indra slaying Vrirtra.
Indra , The King of Gods and Lord of Heavens. The GRAECO-ARYAN predecessor of Indra had the appellations;

APAM AJAS=AGITATOR OF WATERS

The agitation of the waters gave rise to Triptolemus and Dionysius, The Thrice fold warrior and the twice born. Dionysus was a ward of Hermes in his youth, The Thrice greatest.

Indra's power diminished with the rise of the Trimurti.

VRIRTRA, the adversary is known as the drought and kept the waters away until killed by Indra, He is also seen as a snake with 3 heads and is known as AHI/snake.

Capricorn is also associated with SATURN, father of Jupiter. The winter solstice being relevant in that Saturnalia started what is now the 17th of December and lasted one week. The broken horn of Capricorn is the CORNOCOPIA, the horn of Plenty.

SO interestingly enough, in the portion of the Sky known as The SEA, what we perceive as the original Pisces, on the ecliptic, was not A FISH at all , it was Piscis Austrinus, which lies just beneath aquarius and Capricorn. Pisces became the fish only later.

Therefore the Great Sea Beast/ piscis Austrinus literally looks set to swallow the fish Goat of CAPRICORNUS,the fish and the goat being the symbols of Ea/Oannes/jonah, Lord of the Waters, The Baptist IHANNWS.

Therefore the story of Jonh has clear and distinct astrological undertones which stem fundamentally on the surface, from Sumerian/Babylonian mythos with astronomical/logical connotations. This may account for Jonah being set at Nineveh, originally a place of worship to the goddess Ishtar.

The theme of waters is repeated in the book of Genesis;

and The Earth......

And the Earth was wasteness and voidness and darkness upon the face of the deep and the spirit of god hovering upon the face of the waters.

Hi Latona, and Charlotte.

The importance of your post Latona is the way in which it brings all these aspects together, and for some reason it was this lack of realization by nearly all people, that there was such a continuity to ancient and Biblical narratives, which seemed to be most amiss to me. Why something so plainly found has been neglected is a question to which I have no answer, but that it can be plainly found produces many of the missing pieces in the puzzle we seek to answer. These pieces take us the literal narrative to the working maths of the flood story, which prevails all ancient cultures, and can be seen to have been much more importance to those civilizations, as it wasn't a simple story or fairy-tale but a foundation stone of their science.

I think we can easily comprehend that the simple narrative was the best way to transmit ideas to the common people, but its failing was the simple could be seen to function as does a novel. In the West we have many works in novels that have deeper meanings encoded in them, in fact it was the best way to put over hidden secrets without getting one's head cut off. Though now, maybe for the first time in 2000 years, we no longer need to hide such secrets by wrapping them up so as to appear to be something else. But we must remember that many paid dearly for even mentioning such things, as so I hope we can honour those who tried to tell the tale as they planted seeds in many places, hoping or knowing that such a time would come when all could be revealed.

I can only say, as I also said with Don's Hexagon in the GPs, I am over the moon to see all this coming together, but I cannot be attached to the progress of unravelling the mysteries by having any personal ownership to the story or the maths. All of these things where already there and so all we had to do was start looking in the right places and undo the symbolism to the right depth as in the end it is about ourselves, of having no fear of any part of the creative process through which we can look at the whole (mindfulness). All things in their correct time and place.

Something so "plainly found" by the few has been neglected by the many, including me, for lack of brain power and stamina to make it our own, and yes, it can be only transmitted to the common people in simple form.

I have the fluted Maltese Cross without the star. North, south, east, and west, more in keeping with Paul's crossover of energy into matter. Trough the north "arm" or day side of life, the spirits energy descends to coalesce as matter through the three lower arms, the night side of life. The center point is the point of qualification. There is also a "slingshot" action from west to east, hence at the qualification point consciousness goes in three directions while maintaining connection with the spiritual day side of life.

Many little fish make much commotion in my mind, whereas, says Paramahansa Yogananda, the whale of inspiration makes hardly a ruffle. I dare say that years ago in a dream, I stood by a shallow and small body of water in which swam little fishes, and indeed, a friendly white whale swam up and nodged my big toe.

The waters are calm and will deepen and widen in due time.

The Cross of Saint John should be renamed The Starcross of Oannes/Ishtar, I like the ring to it. I could not agree more, The die has been cast and it is just a case of tracing a pattern.
Last nights post was done 'ON THE HOOF' researched while posted, this is not generally my modus operandi and I feel that a bit of refinement is needed with the idea, but I like it.

The Flood, yes, Ishtar again, with Enkidu and Gilgamesh, how can literalism and literalists not see throught he veil and cultrural interpretations, I guess it is like Charlotte says, I agree that the message can only be expressed to the many (not neccesarilly my aims) in simplistic form, although the Mathematical connotations still prickle my skin. As they say, a picture says a thousand words.

I love the tie ins, The White Whale, one hopes it's a Baluga and not AHAB'S foe.

The seventh King in the bible, Ahab was a worshipper of Baal(lord), wherein Baal Haamon can be associated with EL and Dagon. He is generally associated with Cronus/Saturn aswell/ Saturn of the Fish/Goat/Capricornus=Dagon with a Fish tail? The consort of Baal being Tanit, who is none other than the Phoenician Ishtar.

In saying that, there are a lot of Baal's flying around, specifically though Baal Haamon is in concordance with the description of EL being from the mountain HAMEN.

The star of the Akkadian Bel being Jupiter. The word has meaning cross culturally, Beltane for instance, light the fires.

Beelzebub,The Lord of the Flies being the Great adversary of YHWH. Classical accounts tell of Child sacrifice. However some scholars put forward the idea that this is a cpurposeful corruption of Beelzebul, which means Lord of all.

The Ugaritic (Syria)Anat (Virgin) was the sister lover of The Deity Hadad, generally called Baal, During the Hyksos period she is depicted as the daughter of PTAH. Anat being interchangeable with Anu, lord of the sky, she sometimes called Queen of Heaven.

She is mentioned in the Holy Zohar as the Angelic form ANATHIEL.

The Avestic AREVDI SURA ANAHITA owes much to Inanna /Ishtar/Anat and is described as a Divinity of the waters and her Planet is Venus.

She is the Queen of Heaven, The same queen that is the Black Madonna, with 12 stars around her head, she is given in Revelations as the Woman clothed in the Sun ,With the moon at her feet, with 12 stars around her head, fleeing from the dragon and getting refuge in a place in the desert for 1260 days. But she is also the whore of Babylon,The scarlet lady, an expression of the Dichotomy.Also alluding to the Festival Of Ishtar wherein woman prostituted themselves at the Temple. Esentially a renewal festival as it occurred during the Vernal Equinox and is therefore concurrent with Easter. She is the Magna Mater, The roman Cybele holding aloft her Rod.











In the same way we get The Queen of Heaven and The Whore of Babylon, with regard to the Mary's, we get Mary The Virgin and Mary Magdala, whence the 7 devils were cast out.

With regards to Anat, who as a Canaanite/Pheonician incarnation, she is given the appellations;

Depicted as a Goddess of war she boasts how she has put an end to YAMM, literally sea and accorded A god of the sea, he is one of the Elohim, sons of El. Anat also slays the 7 headed Serpent, tellingly.

The Phoenician origin highlighted succintly, not just in mythos and religious philosophy but also in alpha beta. The Hebrew is a direct descendant from the Phoenician/Canaanite and corresponds exactly to the Hebrew. Giving rise to the Greek. The term Qedesh meaning holy one was used to denote the collective individuals.

On the eve of the Sabbath the Shekinah is greeted 'come o bride o come'The Gnostics regarded Sophia as Shekinah, The Quran mentions this and Hussain, son of Ali name his daughter Sakina.

El is Anat's father and Dagon is hadad's. Anat also slew the Calf of El and this may be the origin of the sacrifice of Whole offering given at the Temple, in saying that the Tauric cycle can be found in the mythos of SERAPIS and Mithras slaying the bull, which again, has astrological significance pertaining to Taurus on the ecliptic.

Hi Latona.

The worship of Baal was the sin of putting a created image before the true god, the creator, as Baal represents the forces of fire that move the created, so the image is created in mind firstly before it is formed in any material. If we look toward the created part in prayer and ask the forces contained in the fire to make our own desires come true, we err. The ancient texts tell us the law is set, as are the laws of physics in modern science, so the law is firmly put in place and does not give us such reward of desire, but instead brings forth the miracle of light and life.

Instead we are to find harmony with all parts, or all the people (as they are described), and then with harmony the way forward is determined by the hidden or concealed, the ruler's will is then done on Earth as it is in Heaven (the law is carried out without the hinderance of middle lines of men - our own decisions and actions for self-gain).

The image of Ishtar as the Virgin Queen denotes a nature spawned from the hidden aspect in an immaculate conception, the male/light being beyond our conceptual divisions of the created as a singularity, but as nature gives birth she follows the law and loves all the parts of creation (all men) equally, and so the Queen is also the Harlot. Even in the I Ching the female aspects are given as such a dichotomy.

Baal meaning Lord. Every War God needs an enemy, Justifiably so then that Joshua Ben Nun invaded the Land of milk and Honey and put paid to those nefarious desert deities, of which, proto-YHWH was one. The ELOHIM have a lot to answer for.

Unity in opposites, one defines the other, what defines the despicability of the HARLOT/WHORE, the purity of the Virgin. How can Dry be that without wet and so, on.

Just like The Indo european DYIAS PITER creating the universal law, ARTA, from whence the struggle between positive and negative begins .

Personally, I am inclined to regard that YHWH was the Demiurge,but not the good one of Plato, ala gnosticism, The demiurge thinks he is God, but he does not that there is one above him.

Hi Latona.

You have put most if not all the aspects/ideas of 'The Work' I mention in the book together now. My faith in your ability wasn't misplaced.

The net or the basket is a description given in all ancient cultural narratives concerning the maths/geometry, and I'm pleased to see how you also fit this in to the workings.

As I did have a good look at all aspects of this, and I can be nearly 100% certain the workings haven't been generally known to us for Aeons, only bits and pieces where made known with the return of ancient texts at various times. It needed all the various bits to return to us for this great leap to be made.

We could discuss the reasons why the workings were kept so concealed, but as I pointed out it was at the pain of death to tell of the connection seen between Christianity and Pagan knowledge, and we know many paid the price for making such a revelation. Personally I don't understand the fear of the Church, as I think the truth just makes a truth faith stronger as it is then based on reality.
